FUTURE READY

Future Ready: A New Blueprint for Youth

BGCP is evolving to be Future Ready; we want to grow and reconfigure to meet the needs of our youth community.

Centralized spots for kids and teens to meet with their peers after school are needed more than ever, as many Pasadena-area kids have seen their entire school career impacted by COVID-19 and now the fires. We believe that re-focusing on the needs of each age group will allow us to provide more age-appropriate opportunities and engagement.

A major part of the work is amplified partnerships with fellow long-time non-profits College Access Plan (CAP) and Young & Healthy. In the wake of the devastating Altadena wildfire, school closures, and growing uncertainty about the future, the group is focused on renewing spaces with updated facilities and developmentally tailored programs to meet young people where they are, and help them thrive and plan ahead.

These changes will help us serve all age groups better and most safely.

Future Ready Purpose

To inspire and empower Club Members to achieve success and to champion opportunities for all young people in Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre.

Our Aspirations for Young People

Every young person will have equitable access to high-quality youth development that enables them to:

  • Be safe and experience social, emotional, physical and mental well-being.
  • Graduate high school equipped with skills and experiences that will lead to post-secondary, work and life success.
  • Lead change that will advance their families, their communities and the nation.

What Will This Look Like?

K-5 GRADES

Located at each of our sites (Slavik, Mackenzie-Scott, and Odyssey Charter School), K-5th grade members will experience upgrades to spaces (new outdoor play equipment at Slavik), enhanced programming, intensified staff training and specialization in the needs of our younger members, and more.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Our middle schoolers will benefit from having dedicated staff “homeroom teacher” experiences, renewed focus on the needs of this “tween” age group including newly-revamped programming called Journeys: Paths to Adulthood. The program encompasses elements of formerly-utilized Passport to Manhood and SMART Girls programs. The Journeys program offers a more holistic approach to youth development, addressing various aspects of identity formation through targeted programming for both boys and girls.

HIGH SCHOOL

We’ve had significant donations after the fires, and many of these donors are very excited about a reimagined, dedicated teen space, understanding that today’s teens are facing unprecedented challenges to their mental health and challenges finding support for their career and college pathways. Our brand new teen center will be a safe and dedicated spot for high school students, located at the Mackenzie-Scott Branch, just blocks away from the ravages of the Eaton Fire. The space will have its own entrance, will be 100% separate from the members on the other side of the building, and truly dedicated to becoming a central meeting place, close to John Muir HS, where kids can safely spend time with friends after school and into the evening, access resources for career and college planning, get mental health support, and have fun. A Teen Advisory Council has been actively giving input and helping to make decisions about all aspects of the space and programming.
