Frequently Asked Questions
What age groups does the Club serve?
Ages 5-18 years old (as long as they are still enrolled in High School)
How do I enroll my child in activities or programs?
All of the programs we offer are included in our Memberships. A child has to be a member to participate in all activities and programs we offer at the Club, including special programs like Music Lessons, Tutoring, Swim Lessons and Swim Team.
Are there any membership fees and what do they cover?
Yes, we have the following fees:
- $50 Enrollment Fee (Paid during Summer program and Afterschool Program sign-ups)
- Weekly Program Fee (price depends on your location)
- $25 Transportation Fee – Monthly payments if your child is a part of our transportation program (school year only)
- $50 – Summer Weekly program fee
What safety measures are in place for my child?
We have a 20:1 ratio of members to staff. All of our staff and volunteers are Live scanned and background checked as well as CPR certified (Staff). Learn more about our priority to safety here.
Do you offer family discounts or sibling rates?
Yes, we have a sibling discount of half off of the weekly program fee for child # 2, 3, 4, etc. The sibling discount does not go towards Enrollment Fee or Transportation Fee.
How does the Club accommodate children with special needs?
The Club works closely with parents and teachers to best understand a child’s special needs. Due to the Club’s staff to child ratios (1:20-25), it may not be possible to give one child the close attention they may require. We allow 1:1 aides to attend the program with special needs children, to help them integrate into the program, and to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
What is the staff-to-child ratio during activities?
- For our 5 year old members our ratio is 10:1
- For our 6-18 year old members our ratio is 20:1
- When we take fieldtrips off site our ratio is 5:1 for 5 year olds and 8:1 for 6-18 year olds.
How do I get involved or share feedback about my Club experience?
We have a tab on our website labeled “Contact” you can leave your information as well as a message that gets checked daily.
Parents are also encouraged to attend Parent Advisory Council meetings at each Clubhouse location. These councils meet monthly to provide a platform for parents to share their feedback, ideas, and suggestions.

What types of volunteer opportunities are there?
Volunteers provide valued service to the mission of the Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena. They assist our Youth Development Professionals deliver programs to Club Members. Volunteers may work in the Learning Center, Art Center, STEM Lab, Gym or Teen Center. Both Clubhouses have swimming pools but we require volunteers for this area to be certified lifeguards.
Volunteers provide timely help to our staff during PowerHour (homework help) by working with Club Members in a specific age group. Volunteers may also tutor Club Members who would benefit from additional one to one sessions. Math, reading and language are the primary areas where we provide tutoring, but we are often able to provide help with more advanced topics (e.g., Chemistry, Algebra, etc.).
Volunteers who have unique skills or talents may propose to provide classes beyond what we are offering (e.g., dance, computer coding, chess, origami, etc.).
Volunteers may individually or as a group assist the branches with special projects to maintain our facilities or enhance them.
What qualifications or requirements are there to volunteer?
- Must be at least 15 years of age.
- Having worked with minors is a positive (caring for siblings or babysitting is good).
- Bilingual (i.e., Spanish speaking) is not required but can be beneficial.
- Be competent in basic academic subjects such as reading, writing and math.
- Have good communication skills and the ability to talk with Club Members from age 5 to 17.
- And we look for volunteers with positive attitudes and a demeanor that our Club Members will want to be around!

What is the time commitment for volunteering?
- Minimum of 30 hours is requested.
- Minimum of at least one day per week and two to three hours per visit.
Are there opportunities for corporate teams and groups volunteering?
We have hosted multiple groups from the private sector, community organizations as well as social groups. We have found that we must keep the maximum number of volunteers to between 20 to 30 but no minimum number. Acceptance of group or team volunteers is contingent on day of the week, number of hours, and a project that benefits the Club and the interests of the organization providing the volunteers.
Do we train or provide an orientation?
BGCP does not provide advanced training to volunteers but looks for skills or experience that will allow them to contribute to the program. We do require all volunteers who will work with our Club Members on an ongoing basis to attend a Volunteer Orientation. This is typically done via Zoom and lasts between 30 to 45 minutes.
Can Volunteers request to work with a specific age group?
Volunteers can state a preference for an age group but may be assigned to a different age group as determined by member attendance, staffing and number of other volunteers already working with an age group.
Only adult volunteers (over the age of 18) work with Teens. High School students with Club Members 12 and younger; they do not volunteer in the Teen Center.
Do we offer remote or virtual volunteering?
We do not currently offer opportunities for remote or virtual volunteering. Our Club Members benefit most by direct interaction with volunteers.
Who should I contact for volunteering opportunities?
The Volunteer Coordinator Michael Fenn is the primary contact for the various opportunities to volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena. He can be reached at michael.fenn@bgcpasadena.org or (559) 779-2441.
