COVID-19 UPDATES

February 2, 2021

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

As we said in our e-blast in mid-January, if we can open sooner than March 2, we will. We've been cleared by the health department, and feel that, with all of our safety protocols in place, we are ready to reopen our doors! Our first day back will be Tuesday, February 23, 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at both the Slavik and Mackenzie-Scott Branches.

It's very important that all parents and caregivers are reminded of the waiver that you signed back in the Fall (click here to review).

As you hear us often say, the safety of your kids and families, and our staff, is our #1 priority. It is imperative that all families respond truthfully to our morning health screening questions, and that you communicate frequently with our staff should you know of your child becoming exposed to COVID-19.

Thank you!!!

Fondly,

¡¡Gracias!!

Afectuosamente,

January 19, 2021

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

Happy New Year to you and your families. I hope you are staying healthy.

As you hear us often say, the safety of your kids and families, and our staff, is our #1 priority.

As we move further into January, it is clear that in LA County the surges of COVID-19 continue, and are predicted to continue increasing into February. It is for that reason that BGCP has decided to push our reopening of Club facilities to March 2. We are very sorry for the problem this will cause for some of you. And please know that if anything changes to indicate we can reopen safely, we will shift our plans and reopen sooner. In the meantime, we are working to get our staff members vaccinated and ready for a safe reopening. We hope you will also become vaccinated when the opportunity arises.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding at this time. I will continue to update you as I have more information. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me, JD, Mario, or James.

Fondly,

Lisa J. Cavelier

Afectuosamente,

December 22, 2020

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

I hope this note finds you and your family well, and doing all you can over the holidays to avoid COVID-19.

A lot of thought and planning has gone into everything we have done in 2020. We were thrilled to have great Summer and Fall sessions with the kids, and feel they all benefitted so much from being at the Club during these past six months.

As you know, the safety of your kids and families, and our staff, is our number 1 priority -- always. And transparency with all of you is something I value greatly. So I'm writing today to let you know we have decided to keep the Club closed for a period after the holidays, and our current plan is to reopen on/about February 1, depending on the state of COVID-19. We do not come to this decision easily, and know how difficult it will be for some of you. I'm so sorry for that. Seeing what is happening with the COVID-19 surges, and listening to health authorities, has convinced us it is not wise to have kids and staff in the buildings during the month of January.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding at this time. I will continue to update you as I have more information. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me, JD, Mario, or James.

Wishing you a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season!

Fondly,

Afectuosamente,

Lisa J. Cavelier

December 7, 2020

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers of our Fall Session Kids:

In spite of everything going on in the world, we have had a great Fall Session with your kids! Lots of classroom supervision and school work help, fun games and friendly competitions, and lots of physical activity. The other day, I walked by a very active game of stick ball (some sort of stick with a beach ball), going on in the coned-off Slavik parking lot. It was wonderful to see the kids running around in the sunshine, laughing and screaming!

While the Club is still in compliance with the latest COVID-19 orders, we are changing our date of closure for the holidays to this Thursday, December 10. We will not be open next week, and apologize for the inconvenience this will cause for you. We are doing what we feel is most prudent for the safety and health of our members and our staff.

So this week we will do all of our holiday celebrating, including fun food and our annual toy giveaway on Thursday. We hope all of your kids will join us -- unless, of course, you have any reason to believe they have been exposed to the virus.

And to be clear -- if your child is in one of the pods that was closed for a couple of days last week, they are now welcome to come back to the Club.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we navigate this latest chapter in the COVID-19 adventure. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or one of our staff members.

Wishing you a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season!

Fondly,

Lisa J. Cavelier

Afectuosamente,

As many of you know, BGCP received a generous grant in the summer to do much-needed interior updates in our Slavik Branch. It's been great doing this work with no kids in the building. However, it is going to take 8 days longer than originally planned. Thus, we will reopen our Slavik doors on September 8. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. We have a back-up plan for up to 12 kids for families who are desperate to have care for the 5 days (Aug. 26, 27 and Sept. 1, 2, 3) that this delay will hit. Click here to tell Lisa of your need and to get on the list for these first-come, first-served spots.

Slavik Branch (E. Del Mar Blvd.)

June 3, 2020

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

As my April update to you began, let me repeat we miss you and your children!

Today I am very happy to say that BGCP will be reopening (in a very modified and limited way) on June 22, 2020. Due to COVID-19 and our #1 priority of keeping kids safe, things will look very different. Our main objectives are to provide a safe place for children to go as businesses reopen and you return to your workplaces, as well as give kids lots of fun and safe activities.

Here is the summer plan:

·         8-week Summer Session: June 22 – August 14, 2020

·         Mackenzie-Scott Branch only (with kids split from both Slavik and M-S)

·         Amazing staff mix from both branches

·         Monday – Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Drop-off strictly between 8:00-9:30 a.m.)

·         Friday closed for additional cleaning

·         10:1 ratio of kids in “pods” of similar ages – same staff w/same kids each day

·         70 children + 10 teens maximum in the building

·         For maximum safety, looking for continuity of attendance

·         Some rotations to gym, pool, games room

·         Modified drop-off and pick-up protocols, including temperature taking

·         Social distancing and masks for staff -- always

·         Increased wiping down of surfaces -- always

·         Programs focused on fun, academic support disguised as fun, fitness, mindfulness, swimming, art, computers, and more

·         Breakfast and lunch provided

·         Cost = $100 1-time enrollment fee + $40 per week ($10/day) (financial aid available)

·         Payment due each Friday for the following week, via automatic payment process

To be fair to everyone wishing to attend our Summer Session, we will have a lottery on June 12th. If you wish to participate, please click here, fill out and submit the form by midnight June 11th. Names will be randomly pulled on the morning of June 12th and staff will notify families later that day.

Admittedly, we would love to be opening our doors wide to the more than 500 kids we normally have in the summer. That is simply not possible at this time. We hope you understand.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to JD and me, or our Branch Directors, Mario and James, if you have questions. We can't wait to be back together with you and your kids!

Best,

Lisa J. Cavelier

BGCP FAMILY SURVEY

May 18, 2020

May 18, 2020

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

We need 3 minutes of your time today.

As we are all very aware, we are living with many, many uncertainties. As businesses begin to reopen, what about your children? Will they have a safe place to go? Can the Club reopen in its "normal" way? How many kids can we accommodate, and for how many hours each day? We are working day in and day out to figure out the best way to help as many families as possible during this time.

Now we need your help -- we need to hear from you. Please click on the link and take our 3-minute survey. It will help guide our reopening planning.

New Button

Also, lots of fun and learning for your kids!

VIRTUAL BGCP

If you and your kids haven't checked it out yet, please click here to sign a waiver and get started!

Every afternoon, kids are getting help with their school work (parents are grateful for that!), and joining in on fun activities.

Whether the Club remains closed during the summer or opens in a very limited and modified way, we will continue our online, interactive, fun activities for kids!

As always, CEO Lisa Cavelier and other BGCP leadership staff are available for any questions or concerns you wish to talk about.

April 23, 2020

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

Let me just start by saying that WE MISS YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN ! And we hope you are coping during this time. Please, please reach out if the Club can help you -- we are providing groceries to some families, and can guide you to other resources. Please let us know how we can help you!

Here's 1 Important Thing

Now more than ever, it is important for all of us to complete the 2020 Census Questionnaire and make sure that everyone gets counted. This is our one chance for the next 10 years to get an accurate count of all people living in Pasadena. The data gathered helps determe how billions of federal dollars are allocated to states and local governments, as well as how voting districts will be reapportioned (or redistricted) affecting our elected representation at federal, state, and local levels.

For Pasadena residents, Census data collected in 2010 was used to distribute more than $400 million to support local schools, transportation, housing, and healthcare programs. These are vital programs that serve the most vulnerable members of our community. If you have not already self-responded, please take the time to do so today. It only takes a few minutes! Go to www.my2020census.gov and complete the form online.

And now 2 Fun Things
Did you know that BGCP can take your kids off your hands for a couple of hours each afternoon?
Did you know that we are offering help with school work and other fun activities all week long?

It's TRUE!

BGCP launched virtual school work help this week on Google Hang-outs , as well as other fun and engaging activities for kids.

So now there are two components to Virtual BGCP :

1) Accessible media, open for all kids to utilize, and being updated all the time! and

2) Interactive offerings with BGCP staff members. Parents need to sign a waiver to get started, then we'll get back to you with details. We are experiencing some capacity issues, so go on soon to sign up!

The Tournament of Roses has created a fun, at-home project for you and your kids to enjoy -- the first-ever #VirtualParade , featuring homemade floats made by YOU! Submissions are due May 11, 2020 , and the parade will go live on Facebook Live on May 28, 2020.

Here's what you do:
  • Imagine — what your float could be about or look like.
  • Gather — materials from around your house – recycled newspaper, construction paper, leaves from outside — whatever can help bring your vision to life (even some of your toys).
  • Build your float — anyone in your home can help!
  • Record a video of your float — show off what you've created either in motion or standing still. Show all of its special parts up close. Also, tell a little about your float – the theme, what inspired it, what you used to make it and anything else you want to highlight!
  • Email the video to rosebudparade@tournamentofroses.com by Monday, May 11.
  • Tune in — for the premiere on Facebook Live on May 28, 2020.

April 7, 2020

Dear Parents, Guardians and other Caregivers,

Our hearts go out to all of you during this time. We've been checking in by phone and email to many of you, and hope that you will reach out to us if we can be of any help to you at all.

Our BGCP team has been working hard to create and curate our virtual programming, so we hope you and your kids will check our website regularly. We will continue to post activities throughout the school closure through the efforts of core program staff. Due to the Club closure, we have temporarily furloughed many of our program staff. Both Branch Directors are still available to answer your questions, connect you with resources, and the like. We hope it's not long before our team is all back together again!

Please never hesitate to reach out to me.

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

On the one hand, time seems to stand still. On the other, I looked at my calendar yesterday and saw something I did on March 6. And it seemed like it was a year ago! So much is happening, and so quickly.

A few updates:

1) We want and need to hear from you if you need help. Do you need food? Are you having trouble getting to the PUSD food distribution sites? Please email me at lisa.cavelier@bgcpasadena.org. We are working with community partners to help get food and other help out to families.

2) Virtual BGCP is up and running, and we keep adding to it! Click here with your kids for fun and educational things they can do while at home. Have your kids check in often!

3) One of our moms wanted to be sure to share this memo from CDSS ACMS with you, especially families with foster children. Click here to read.

4) Thinking of Summer? We are keeping a close eye on the progression of COVID-19, and trying to project ahead toward reopening. Right now, we don't have anything solid to report, but will be making decisions about a Summer Session around mid-April. We will keep you posted.

5) Club revenues are down by 17% in March, and anticipated 48% in April and beyond. If you or anyone you know wants to help the Club with a donation, please click below. Every little bit helps us keep our staff and Club ready to reopen when the time comes.

We will all get through this together. Please, please reach out if we can help you and your family. Do your best to distance, and stay safe and healthy.

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

This is hard. We all feel it. And BGCP wants you to know our hearts are with you and your families.

I have a few updates:
1) We are stopping our food service as of today because PUSD's service is up and running now, and working well (and we only had 1-2 takers). Click here for full details on where to pick up food. Depending on what the district does during Spring Break, we may open up our food distribution again.
2) If you are unable to pick up food because you are ill or otherwise unable to leave your home, please email me at lisa.cavelier@bgcpasadena.org. We are working with other community partners to help get food out to anyone in this situation.
3) Our Virtual BGCP is up and running! Click here with your kids for fun and educational things they can do while at home. We will be adding to it a lot, so have your kids check in often!
4) Follow us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/BGCPasadena) and Instagram (@BGCPasadena) for videos from our staff to your kids, and access to more resources.

Here's a message for your kids from Mr. James!

As I've said before, we look forward to opening back up again as soon as we possibly can and will continue to keep you updated.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns.

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

We have learned that the Pasadena Unified School District will be closing schools to students as of Monday , March16, 2020 . Our first priority is to ensure the safety of our kids, staff, and families, and stopping the spread of COVID-19. As we shared last night, it is our intention to close our facilities based on the actions of the PUSD. Therefore, as of Monday, March 16, 2020, we will close both of our Clubhouses -- the Slavik and Mackenzie-Scott Branches -- as well as our Performing Arts Center where private music lessons take place.

The timing of how long the closures will take place is still uncertain. PUSD plans to reopen on April 6.

In an effort to continue to serve our kids and families, we will offer a lunch pick-up option at each branch, from 10:30 a.m. - noon each day next week, while we evaluate how to move forward. You are welcome to stop by the front door of the Branch where you will be given a lunch, only during those hours, and only next week, until further notice.

We hope this closure will help keep you and your children healthy. We know this is a very hard time for you and our hearts go out. We look forward to opening back up again as soon as we possibly can and will continue to keep you updated.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns. Here's a link to important PUSD updates: https://www.pusd.us/Page/8303

Dear BGCP Parents and Caregivers:

The COVID-19 situation is constantly changing and evolving. Our first priority is to ensure the safety of our kids, staff, and families. We are following the situation closely, and are in close touch with the Pasadena Unified School District and the Pasadena Public Health Department.

At each of our branches, our staff, children, and volunteers are taking steps hourly to wash hands and disinfect surfaces. We are also making sure that any child showing signs of illness is not allowed in the Club. We hope you will continue to work with us in this regard, and keep kids home who have any symptoms.

In order to best serve our community and help stop the spread of COVID-19, our plan is to follow the lead of the Pasadena Unified School District. If PUSD closes schools due to the virus, the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena will also close our facilities. We hope this does not happen, and will continue to be in touch with you in the coming days. We are making plans to continue to serve meals to our members and families, on a to-go basis, should a closure occur. We will send out more information as we have it.

Regarding Spring Break, we have no information to share at this time. Much depends on how things play out over the coming two weeks, whether or not the schools have closed, as well as directives from the Pasadena Public Health Department.

Thank you for taking all of the precautionary steps to keep kids, staff, and families safe. We are working hard to make sure that your children feel safe and supported during this time.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to Branch Directors and/or me if you have questions or concerns.

Lisa Cavelier
CEO

Reducing the Spread of COVID-19

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask:
  1. CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
  2. Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.
  • Wash your hands often:
  1. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  2. It takes an average of 11.8 seconds to sing the entire Happy Birthday song, so if you sing it twice, that will ensure you've scrubbed long enough. This is a great method to share with children in your family. While this measure is simple, it is effective.
  3. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  4. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
