FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ODYSSEY CHARTER SCHOOLS AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM

  • Q: Why do you call the kids “members”?

All children and teens who participate in the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena’s programs are called

members, as in “members of the Club.”

  • Q: What are the program hours?

From school dismissal until 6:30 p.m. daily.

  • Q: How will members be divided each afternoon?

Members will be divided into smaller groups by grade. Each group will have a maximum of 1-2 close grades together.

  • Q: How many days are members required to attend the program weekly?

There is no requirement for how many days kids attend. However, BGCP runs many great programs in

the course of a week, and kids benefit more when they attend more frequently.

  • Q: Is early dismissal allowed?

Parents can pick up their kids any time during the afternoon, up until 6:30 p.m. There is no minimum

amount of time kids need to attend the program, but as previously stated, the more time they spend at the program, the more they benefit.

  • Q: How do you support kids with special needs?

The Club works closely with parents and teachers to best understand a child’s special needs. Due to

the Club’s staff-to-child ratios (1:20-25), it may not be possible to give one child the close attention they may require. We allow 1:1 aides to attend the program with special needs children, to help them

integrate into the program, and to ensure their safety and the safety of others.

  • Q: Do you have a limited capacity or will everyone who is interested be able to participate?

A: The Club has a maximum capacity at this time of 100 members at the Odyssey North campus and 75

at Odyssey South. As this pilot program gets more settled, we will consider adding more staff and

    children.

  • Q: For school breaks like Thanksgiving week, Winter holiday break, and Spring break, will the Club be an option for child care? If so will the cost be the same?

There will be no afterschool program offered on the two Odyssey Charter Schools campuses during

those periods. However, all Odyssey students are invited to attend full-day programs at BGCP’s two main Clubhouses (Slavik Branch on Del Mar Blvd. or Mackenzie-Scott Branch on N. Fair Oaks Avenue) during those weeks. There will be a nominal flat fee charged per week. More information to come during the Fall.

  • Q: Will the afterschool program be open for days like early dismissal days and or pupil free days (parent teacher conferences, back to school night, etc.)?

The program will be open on early dismissal and pupil free days.

  • Q: Can you explain how medication management works, if a child needs meds during the afterschool program hours?

Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena does not administer any medication to children. However, staff can

remind a member when to take their medication. If your child may need an inhaler or an epi pen,

please bring an extra to keep at the BGCP Clubhouse on campus. Our staff will not have access to any

meds you might keep in the school office.

  • Q: Will the on-campus program at Odyssey Charter Schools replace the traditional program of transporting students to the BGCP Fair Oaks branch?

Yes, for Odyssey Charter Schools students. The Club will no longer provide transportation from OCS to either of the BGCP branches.

  • Q: Will the children be directed to complete homework on a daily basis?

Yes, the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena runs a program each day called Power Hour which is

homework time. As we settle in to our programs at Odyssey, we will better understand the kids’ needs,

and adjust how we run Power Hour accordingly.

  • Q: Will the Boys & Girls Club provide snack to the kids? If so, what is the stance on peanuts for the kids who have severe peanut allergies.

There will be no afternoon snack provided during the first month of the program. Only water will be

provided and families may send a snack with their child to consume. We are exploring options for

providing snacks and will inform families in early September how that will look. NO PEANUTS OR FOOD ITEMS WITH PEANUTS IN THEM WILL BE ALLOWED FOR SNACK DUE TO SEVERE ALLERGIES.

  • Q: If my child has friends who are a year younger but will be at the same school, can we make requests to be in the same BGC group?

Yes, but we make no guarantees about being in the same groups. Creating the groups is based on a

few factors that may preclude your child from being together with their friends.

  • Q: How will the kids get to the Club locations? Will staff be picking up the kids at their classrooms (especially the younger kids, TK-2nd graders)?

Each campus will have a “Clubhouse” where members will report to start their afternoon. On the Odyssey North campus, it is Bungalow H; on the South Campus, it’s Room A-102. They will each have a large banner identifying them as the Clubhouses. Yes, BGCP staff will pick up younger kids from their classrooms and accompany them to the Clubhouse.

  • Q: Please clarify what your payment policy is on missing full weeks of the program

If a child does not attend a full week of the program, the family will be charged half of the weekly fee ($25) as a placeholder, to hold that spot for their child. It is suggested that a family not do this more than 1-2 times per semester, or their spot may be given to another family.

  • Q: How does pick-up work?

All parents/caregivers will be required to park and go to the Campus Clubhouse to sign out their

child/ren. BGCP staff will radio to the member’s group leader to release them, and the child will proceed to the Clubhouse to meet up with their parent/caregiver.

  • Q: Can you clarify how swimming might work? There was a portion to sign on the application in regards to swimming, but there is not a pool on campus?

It is our hope to provide some swimming opportunities for kids at some point in the future, but no plans are currently in place. BGCP has a pool at each of its branches, and the tentative thinking is that kids could be transported to the Mackenzie-Scott Branch (very close to Odyssey campuses) for swimming lessons, or swim team, etc. We will keep families informed as plans develop in the coming months.

  • Q: Will you be offering a morning Club program? Or just the afterschool program?

Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena will offer only afterschool programming.
