Annual Report 2022-2023

Dear Friends of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena,

Like each year at this time, we are struck by how quickly the year flew by, and reminded how important it is to be intentional. In the blink of an eye, our youngest kids progress to our Teen Program, then bid farewell to the Club to their next chapters. Here’s what the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena’s intentionality has looked like this year.

GOING DEEPER

More than just an annual theme, Going Deeper for us this year meant taking a harder look at the needs of our kids and families, and pushing harder to address them, like with our Case Management Program. We’re recognizing that many kids have been negatively impacted by many factors these past few years. In this program, we identify such children, assess their

needs, and then work with their parents and guardians to surround them with support and services to help overcome the difficulties they face. It’s the same in the academic realm with our Tutoring Program that is helping kids get past learning loss and other challenges.

DATA

Going Deeper also means gathering, reporting, and acting on more data than we have in the past. It’s one thing to see and feel participation, engagement and growth, but quite another thing to measure those things with facts and numbers that measure our successes, and ultimately guide us in our decision making. This year was a great re-start that will boost us forward in a big way next year and beyond.

DEVELOPING OUR PEOPLE

BGCP has been very sensitive to changing workplace dynamics and has been able to retain a best-in-class staff by offering opportunities for them to grow as employees through trainings and coaching, as well as offerings for personal growth such as educational and financial planning assistance. Employee retention and job satisfaction are paramount to providing our

members with an Optimal Club Experience.

Delivering on Program Excellence

A final thought on intentionality for the year is Delivering on Program Excellence, providing a wide range of opportunities for members, and always striving for the highest quality outcomes. One example of this, and there are many, was the expanded CREATES program. CREATES returned after the pandemic and provided opportunities for all Club members at all locations to

express themselves through highly personal visual art. Their pieces were showcased at gallery-style exhibitions open to Club families and the wider community. Members were able to create pieces using a range of high-quality art materials across a range of visual artistic disciplines, including sculpture, fashion design, pastels, photography, and more.

Each day, we feel deeply and focus on the WHY of what we are doing – we are preparing good citizens to become the next generation of business leaders, of informed community members, of parents and workers, and your neighbors and friends. We invest everything we have toward giving them all the very best start at this, and appreciate everyone who joined us in this journey this year.

Best,

Lisa Cavelier, Chief Executive Officer

Barry Pyle, Board Chair

OUR MISSION

We enable children and youth in the community, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, healthy, and responsible citizens.

The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena is an 86-year-old organization committed to education and youth development. Our goal is to identify the barriers our kids have to learning, remove those barriers, and bring out the best in them through our out-of-school education and enrichment programs.

Throughout the year and all summer, the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena provides opportunity and hope to Pasadena community kids, many of whom come from under-resourced economic, social, and family circumstances. We offer programs and services to every child, regardless of race, gender, religion, economic status, or any other factor.

Club Family Spotlight

It’s been an unbelievably challenging five years for Edson, 12, and his mom Iris. Learning about their journey is like reading the pages of an epic novel like The Odyssey. However, their story is very real, and it is one which we at the Club are moved by daily in our service of those who need us most.

It all started about five years ago, when the gangs in Guatemala threatened Edson’s older brother to join them “or else.” Tragically, “or else” meant never coming back home one day. Iris and Edson believe that he was murdered.

Protecting herself and Edson, Iris made the difficult decision to migrate north. Along the way in Mexico, they were kidnapped. And then, at the Rio Grande crossing, they were attacked by killer bees and rescued by border patrol. It took a month in the hospital for them to heal, and the incident received media coverage.

Through family and friend connections, Iris and Edson settled briefly in nearby Lancaster until they were evicted. They are now living in a home with other families in Pasadena, but still experience housing instability.

When they first settled in Pasadena, Edson would pass by the colorful Mackenzie-Scott Clubhouse and told his mom – “I want to go there!” Iris believed it was too costly for Edson to attend. However, after reaching out to

Clubhouse Director Mario Maytorena and working with Club staff, Edson is now able to attend the Club. He has been coming to the Club since the Summer of 2023.

Edson now calls the Club his second home. Suffering from anxiety and depression since his unimaginable ordeals, Edson finds the Club to be a place of happiness, safety, and support. He says that he found his home at the Club, and that everyone loves him here.

The Club is also a place where Edson receives help with challenges at school and his English and History classes. With the help of Club staff like Mr. Frank and Mr. Mario, Edson’s grades in those subjects rose from near-failing to an A. Edson considers them both like counselors. (Note: While they are highly trained, dedicated staff members, Frank and Mario are not trained counselors!)

Through all the darkness, Iris’ face lights up when she talks about Edson at the Club. She says that at the Club, “kids get good education, love, and have safety. And lots of help and caring.” And she is grateful for a safe place while she’s hard at work cleaning houses or, more recently, recovering from an accident.

Edson is hopeful for his future. He wants to become an attorney and “help people any way he can.” In the meantime, Edson brightens the Clubhouse with his cheerful attitude and willingness to participate in activities and programs. We deeply appreciate Iris sharing her family’s story with the Club, and we are privileged to support Edson on his journey toward a Great Future!

Core Programs Offered in 2022-2023

The Club’s programs align with our three pillars of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character and Leadership

Development. This year, we deepened our program offerings in many areas, especially in the areas of wellness and social-emotional

learning. As always, our members had abundant opportunities to build their leadership, teamwork, academic, social, athletic, and

creative skills, as well as to develop positive relationships with peers and trusted adults. Here are the highlights of programs offered in

the 2022-2023 fiscal year, both during the school year and all summer long:

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

PROJECT LEARN & MORE

Project Learn is BGCP’s signature year-round program focused on academic success. Project Learn helps Club members perform better in school and build self-confidence, leading to a sense of overall satisfaction and academic accomplishment. Project Learn’s components include Power Hour daily homework help, individual tutoring when needed, and high-yield learning activities that keep learning fun. Teens also benefit from diplomas2Degrees, a college and career readiness program designed to ensure that high school members graduate on time with a customized plan for the future. And the Summer Brain Gain program, with its fun and engaging learning activities, ensures that all members keep their brains sharp during the summer months.

SKILL-BUILDING ENRICHMENT

Programs such as DIY STEM, CREATES, and Arts with an “S” provide hands-on opportunities to build “hard” skills that have translatable career and creative applications. These include coding, robotics, photography, mixed media, fashion design, sculpture, and more. The Money Matters Program teaches members the fundamentals of financial literacy, including creating and adhering to a budget. The Club also partners with the K-9 Youth Alliance to provide a 3-week rescue dog training program, enhancing older members’ sense of responsibility, discipline, and compassion for others.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

TRIPLE PLAY

Through Triple Play, members adopt a healthy diet, practice healthy lifestyle choices, and are educated about the importance of a lifelong commitment to fitness. Sports offered during 2022-2023 included baseball, indoor soccer, flag football, golf, rock climbing, basketball, and volleyball. BGCP’s sites also offer plenty of social recreation opportunities with members and staff through ping pong, pool, foosball, and board games.

AQUATICS

The Aquatics Program is a signature offering at BGCP, teaching members that swimming is not only a life-saving skill, but it can be a fun and fulfilling part of a healthy lifestyle. Our Aquatics staff teach members how to improve their skills in the water, fair play, and teamwork.

GOOD CHARACTER & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

LEADERSHIP PROGRAMMING

Through the Club’s character and leadership development programs, Club kids learn to be engaged citizens involved in the community who model strong character and plan to register to vote. The Club offers three signature leadership development programs: Torch Club, Keystone, and Youth of the Year. A new Changemakers program also helped empower older members to build new solutions to societal challenges. Ryan’s Green Team also promotes environmental stewardship and develops members to become leaders who take action to protect the planet.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

The Club offers proven character development programming to members on a rotating schedule, including Passport to Manhood, SMART Girls, KidSmartz, and SMART Moves. These programs offer age-appropriate lessons to members about healthy decision-making, physical and emotional safety, peer and media influence, self-care and self-esteem, relationship-building, conflict resolution skills, and more.

NEW WELLNESS PROGRAMS OFFERED

In response to the escalating mental health needs of youth at the Club and in the community, the Club significantly increased its efforts to advance youth wellness. Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, the Club added two new programs to build members’ social-emotional skill development and to provide at-risk youth with individualized supports. First, weekly Life Skills groups, facilitated by marriage and family therapist trainees, teach middle and high school members critical social-emotional skills rooted in mindfulness and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In addition, the Club’s new Family Advocacy Program provides targeted case management services to the Club’s highest-risk youth, supporting members as they pursue their goals and navigate personal and educational challenges. These programs complement the Club’s existing wellness programs, including “Meta-Moment” emotional regulation program for all members.

Volunteer Spotlight

We are privileged to benefit from many special community partnerships. Two of these are our partnerships with Ability First and Southern California Resources for Independent Living. Every week, their helpful clients assist us with Clubhouse tasks. From organizing school supplies, to sanitizing surfaces, to supporting with administrative projects, our cheerful friends help ensure that our Clubhouses are clean, organized, and stocked. We deeply appreciate their time, energy, and commitment to the Club!

Staff Spotlight

Frank Jacob embodies what it means to give back. Frank, the Club’s Athletic Coordinator, is both an alum of the Club and a 7-year Club employee. Frank started attending the Club when he was just six years old, and as he grew up, he found it to be a refuge from Pasadena’s gang violence. It was a place where he learned how to play basketball from caring coaches, discovered a talent for drawing and crafts, and felt the love of Club staff who believed in him, mentored him, and showed him how to become a man.

The Club was also a place that showed youngsters in Northwest Pasadena another way, a positive alternative to gang and street life. Frank says that he has friends who are not alive today because they didn’t have a place like the Club to come to, or mentors like former Club staff members Larry Cole and Joe Ford. He is proud to be a product of Northwest Pasadena, and to show how the Club led him down a life-saving path.

Life has come full circle for Frank. His own children now attend the Club, and he is instilling the values he learned at the Club into a new generation. Frank is committed to saving young lives by being a coach, mentor, and trusted adult to today’s Club kids. He encourages Club members to believe in themselves, stay motivated to pursue their goals and make good choices, and to be accountable for their actions.

Frank also sees that the Club has improved in many ways from his youth. The Club’s more structured and wide-ranging programs give members more opportunities to learn new things that they might not otherwise learn. For example, Frank credits the new Meta-Moment program for teaching members how to identify emotional triggers and regulate their emotions and actions. He wishes that he and his friends had this program growing up, because on the streets, “all they know is fighting.” Frank also created his own program called Identify Crisis, which helps members identify who they are and what they value. Frank also appreciates that the Club is a diverse place where kids learn to respect, value, and learn from people who look differently from them.

As the Club’s Athletic Coordinator, Frank leads many of the Club’s sports teams and health and fitness programs. Through these activities Frank teaches members the value of teamwork, integrity, and not giving up. As an example of the next generation of lives he’s touched, former Club kids who have gone on to play professional sports in the NBA and NFL, have come back to personally thank Frank for coaching them.

With his positive, fun attitude, and his steadfast focus on motivating the next generation of Club kids, Frank is truly a “game-changer” at the Club. His work everyday at the Club truly saves lives and builds Great Futures!
