Annual Report 2021-2022
Dear Friends of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena,
Like for many others, the past twelve months found the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena hitting the re-set button. Sometimes multiple times. But our laser-focus remained on four key elements of our work with kids and families.
People at Our Heart
Our people are at the heart of what we do! They are what make our programs great and what keep kids coming back to the Club each day. In spite of hiring challenges in early 2021, we have been able to retain a best-in-class staff, offering opportunities for them to grow as employees through trainings and coaching, as well as offerings for personal growth such as educational and financial planning assistance. Our volunteers also returned in force, providing thousands of hours tutoring members, offering homework help, and completing special projects benefitting the Club.
Partnership Launch
Our Odyssey Charter Schools partnership officially launched in August 2021, with more than 240 kids enrolled in our after-school program on their two campuses. Every day, Monday through Friday, as well as on pupil-free days, dedicated Club staff have provided signature programming focused on Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character and Leadership Development. BGCP and Odyssey created a strong foundation for partnership during the 2021-2022 year, which has grown over the past several months. Through the partnership with Odyssey, the Club more than doubled our membership during the 2021-2022
school year.
Program Expansion
The Club continued to find creative and fun ways to serve members during the 2021-2022 year. In addition to our Odyssey expansion and deepening of our programming at all our sites, 2021-2022 also saw the return of Sleep-Away Camp in the local mountains. We transported 50 members (in our new vans!) to a Lions International camp in Wrightwood in June 2022 for outdoor activities, friendship-building, and memory- making. Yours truly (Lisa) was a great sport after getting thrown into the camp pool on the final day!
Perfecting our Facilities
It was another big year for facilities at Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena. With the generous support from LA County, The Ahmanson Foundation, Skylight Foundation, and The Helen and Will Webster Foundation, the Club completed a full renovation of our 30,000 square-foot Mackenzie-Scott Branch in Northwest Pasadena, including a new HVAC system throughout. Our facilities all reflect how we want our members, their families, and our staff to feel about spending time in updated and beautiful surroundings.
Club leadership is optimistic we are on a strong trajectory, and we are grateful for the incredible support we receive from the community and all of you.
Best,
Lisa Cavelier, Chief Executive Officer
Barry Pyle, Board Chair
OUR MISSION
We enable children and youth in the community, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, healthy, and responsible citizens.
The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena is an 85-year-old organization committed to education and youth development. Our goal is to identify the barriers our kids have to learning, remove those barriers, and bring out the best in them through our out-of-school education and enrichment programs.
Throughout the year and all summer, the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena provides opportunity and hope to Pasadena community kids, many of whom come from under-resourced economic, social, and family circumstances. We offer programs and services to every child, regardless of race, gender, religion, economic status, or any other factor.

- Club Family Spotlight -
“They care.” That’s what Chantel Reyes says when reflecting on what the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena means to her. Chantel, who works as an Authorizations Coordinator in a women’s outpatient health facility in Mission Hills, has been sending her son, Jacob S., to the Club since he was 5 years old. After Jacob struggled at another after-school program, which focused mainly on homework and quiet time, Chantel learned about the Boys & Girls Club, and, after his first summer, knew that it was the place for her energetic and outgoing son to grow.
At first the Club offered a safe and fun place for Jacob to swim, play sports, go on field trips, and make friends. But over time, the impact grew. Chantel says that during her latest parent teacher conference with Jacob’s teacher, she learned his math skills had excelled immensely. She knew right away the improvement was because of the tutoring Jacob received from the Club, and the fact that Jacob, “gets the attention he needs to thrive and grow.”
When asked what his favorite part about the Club is, with excitement in his eyes and big smile on his face, Jacob exclaims, “friendship!” It’s clear that wherever Jacob goes, he makes friends, creating his own strong sense of belonging at the Club. He also considers all staff his friends, especially staff at both the Mackenzie- Scott Clubhouse and Odyssey South after-school site, as those sites are where he spends most of his time. Chantel adds, “Miss Adriana and Mr. Ivan have truly gone above and beyond because you can tell they care for Jacob, and they are so friendly and patient with him, every day.”
However, it isn’t just about the friendships and personalized tutoring that makes the Club so special. As Chantel put it, “The Club gives Jacob opportunities he wouldn’t get otherwise. That is what I have always wanted — to provide him with things to help him grow and become the best version of himself.” During one of his summers at Mackenzie-Scott, Jacob participated in a coding class, which is where he fell in love with technology. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, he responds excitedly, “a Youtuber or a coder!” “Without the Club,” Chantel adds, “he wouldn’t even know about his love for coding or technology.”
Chantel says she would recommend the Club to other families, and that she is so grateful for the scholarships her family has received over the years. “I am a single mother with limited financial resources. The Club always does its best to make sure that Jacob has access to the programs and resources here - no matter what.” Chantel concludes, with a comforting smile on her face, “Everything here at the Club helps. Jacob is accepted for who he is, and that’s life-changing.”
Core Programs Offered in 2021-2022
The Club offers programming aligned with our three pillars of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character and Leadership Development. This year, our comprehensive programs gave our members plentiful opportunities to discover new skills, regain academic ground, stay active, and build relationships. Here is a snapshot of the programming offered in the 2021-2022 fiscal year, both during the school year and all summer long:
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
PROJECT LEARN
Project Learn is BGCP’s signature year-round program focused on academic success. Project Learn helps Club members perform better in school and build self- confidence, leading to a sense of overall satisfaction and academic accomplishment. Project Learn’s components include high-yield learning activities that keep learning fun, and tutoring for members who need it most. Project Learn in the Club’s two Teen Centers also includes the College Bound program, a college and career readiness program that works to ensure high school students graduate on time with a customized plan for the future.
SKILL-BUILDING ENRICHMENT
Programs such as DIY STEM and CREATES movie-making and photography program provide hands-on opportunities to build “hard” skills that have translatable career applications. The Money Matters Program teaches members the fundamentals of financial literacy, including creating and adhering to a budget, and the benefits of saving. The Club also partners with the K-9 Youth Alliance to provide 3-week rescue dog training program for middle and high school members, enhancing members’ sense of responsibility, discipline, and compassion for others.
ARTS WITH AN “S”
The Club continued its investment in arts programming during the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Entitled Arts with an “S,” the Club’s arts program spans a variety of artistic disciplines. The Club provides diverse programming in several art forms: Theater, Dance, Painting, Sculpture, Mixed Media, and the CREATES program.
HEALTHY LIFESTYLES
TRIPLE PLAY
Through Triple Play, members adopt a healthy diet, practice healthy lifestyle choices, and are educated about the importance of a lifelong commitment to fitness. Sports offered during 2021-2022 included baseball through a partnership with Major League Baseball and BGCA, indoor soccer, golf, rock climbing, basketball, and volleyball. BGCP’s sites also offer plenty of social recreation opportunities with members and staff through ping pong, pool, foosball, and board games.
AQUATICS
The Aquatics Program teaches kids that swimming can be a fun and fulfilling part of a healthy lifestyle. It helps members improve their skills in the water, and teaches them fair play and teamwork. Aquatics programming was strengthened this year through partnerships with the Michael Phelps, Swim Up Hill, and Meow Meow Foundations.
HEALTHY HABITS
The Healthy Habits program offers members hands-on activities that reinforce the importance of a healthy diet and nutrition. Activities focus on helping youth assess, identify, and recognize healthy behaviors and messages.
GOOD CHARACTER & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
LEADERSHIP PROGRAMMING
Through the Club’s character and leadership development programs, Club kids learn to be engaged citizens involved in the community who model strong character and plan to register to vote. The Club offers three signature character and leadership development programs: Torch Club, Keystone, and Youth of the Year. Ryan’s Green Team also promotes environmental stewardship and develops members to become leaders who take action to protect the planet.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
The Club offers proven character development programming to members on a rotating schedule, including Passport 2 Manhood, SMART Girls, KidSmartz, and SMART Moves. These programs offer age-appropriate lessons to members about healthy decision-making, physical and emotional safety, peer and media influence, self-care and self-esteem, relationship-building, conflict resolution skills, and more.
Meta-Moment and Empowered Voices are two additional character development and wellness programs introduced during the 2021-2022 year, designed to build social-emotional skills and foster members’ mental wellness and resiliency. Empowered Voices, focused on teens, expanded from a pilot held at the Club in Summer 2021 in collaboration with other local Clubs and the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Volunteer Spotlight
The Club benefitted this year from the talents and time of generous volunteers. Over the course of six months, dozens of volunteers transformed the garden at the Slavik Clubhouse into a brightly-painted, low- maintenance, welcoming space for relaxation and reflection. Volunteers from Old Navy, Bluebeam, the Junior League of Pasadena, Chick-fil-A, as well as two Boy Scout groups and at least 10 individual volunteers contributed to this transformation.
Staff Spotlight
Natalie Torres is an energetic, hard-working Youth Development Professional at one of BGCP’s after-school program sites at Odyssey Charter Schools. Working with young members in Transitional Kindergarten through First Grade, Miss Natalie enjoys the members’ creativity and excitement for trying new things. Her favorite activity with her group of 25 members is helping them with House Challenges – fun and friendly competitions across all Club sites that foster teamwork and encourage deeper exploration of diverse subject matters. She loves how her well-prepared group comes together on House Challenge Day with confidence and positivity – assuring Miss Natalie that, “We got this!”
Miss Natalie has been with the Club since August 2021. She has made many memories since that time, including a fun and hot day when members were allowed to shower Club staff with lots of water balloons. She also recalls fondly BGCP’s Sleep- away Camp in June 2022, when she was in charge of the cabin of 8-10 year old girls. Toward the end of the week, the campers tearfully read letters from their families at home. The girls – who were strangers at the beginning of the week – comforted each other and gave each other hugs. At the end of the week, the girls even pushed their beds together so they could sleep close to one another.
Best of all, Miss Natalie, who plans for a career working with children, appreciates being a trusted adult who will listen to members, show them love, and keep them safe. Miss Natalie would also like readers to know how welcoming all of the Club’s sites are, and how Club staff will always greet members with open arms.
Thank you, Miss Natalie, for your commitment to the Club, and for having a positive impact on our youngest members’ lives!
