Education & Career Development

Enabling youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations, and embrace technology to achieve success in a career.

ProjectLearnProject Learn

Project Learn is our after school education program that reinforces what our members learn in the classroom and helps them to retain that knowledge. One important component of this program involves what are called HYLAs (high-yield learning activities). Through Project Learn, our staff uses all the areas and programs in the Club to create opportunities for HYLAs, which include leisure reading, writing activities, discussions with knowledgeable adults, helping others, homework help, tutoring, and games (such as Scrabble), that develop our members’ cognitive skills. With HYLAs, we make learning fun for our kids and instill in them a lifelong love of learning. Project Learn also emphasizes parent involvement and collaboration between our Club and our local schools in order to create the best after school learning environment for our members.

Power Hour

Power Hour offers a structured time and place for Club staff and volunteers to help members complete their homework – and start each school day better prepared and with a sense of confidence and competence. As members complete homework assignments and participate in fun, hands-on activities that reinforce their learning, they earn Power Points that they can redeem for incentive prizes and special privileges. In addition, Power Hour offers small-group or one-on-one tutoring assistance for members in need of additional help with specific subjects, and allows us to provide extra attention and focused assistance to at-risk members and those in need of motivation and direction.

Club Tech

Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, Digital Image Pro—all programs that our members can explore through the Club Tech curriculum in order to boost their technology skills for school and career success. This program provides our members access to state-of-the-art computers and software, with online lessons delivered in English or Spanish.

In addition, Skill Tech introduces our members to the world of computers with a basic skills program that develops their proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets and other software  through fun, engaging, hands-on lessons and projects tailored to four different age groups.

Skill Tech II teaches advanced but practical computer technology skills through animated, interactive tutorials developed exclusively for Boys & Girls Clubs, as well as with hands-on, instructor-led group activities. The program introduces members to hardware and networking skills and technology-related career opportunities.

CollegeBoundCollege Bound

Preparing for college can be daunting. To help make the process easier, we offer College Bound. Through one-on-one consultations, staff and volunteers help our teen members, ages 14-18, prepare for this next step in their education. They monitor coursework to ensure our kids are fulfilling requirements for college admission, offer assistance with the application process, help research financial aid and scholarship opportunities, help prepare them for PSAT and SAT testing, and coordinate college tours to provide a first-hand experience of college life.

MoneyMattersMoney Matters

Learning financial responsibility is an important part of growing up. Helping accomplish this is our Money Matters program, which teaches members, ages 13-18, basic money management skills. Participants learn how to manage a checking account, balance a checkbook, budget, save and invest, as well as how to start small businesses and pay for college. The Money Matters website offers our teens instruction in building their money management knowledge through interactive activities, games and tools like a savings and financial aid calculator to plan for college.

While the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena primarily encourages our teenage members to pursue post-secondary education, we also help prepare them for careers.  Through the Career Launch program, members can assess their job skills and interests, explore different career paths, and learn to make sound educational decisions in preparation for joining the workforce. The program also provides job-hunting tips, job-shadowing, and training opportunities.
