Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena Celebrates 9th Annual Black Tie & Burgers

The 9th Annual Black Tie & Burgers took place on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the private home of Mr.  & Mrs. Jeh K. Meher in Pasadena.  The gala featured live music by flamenco fusion band Calé, silent and live auctions, delectable appetizers and desserts from Cynthia Brook’s Catering, and charburgers from local favorite, The Habit. Proceeds from the event fund the Club’s year-round programming.  More than 275 friends and supporters gather last Saturday and raised nearly $200,000 to support programing at the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena.

“The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena is the after-school home for more than 2,000 members in Pasadena,” says Brian Davis, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club.   “But the Club is so much more than an after-school program.  We offer more than 60 unique programs that support our focus areas of academic excellence, healthy lifestyles, good character and citizenship, college and career development, and the arts.  Our members swim in our pools, experiment in our STEM lab, play in our gyms, and explore in our computer labs every day.  We infuse high-yield learning activities into everything we do.”

Committee Co-Chair and Board Member Melina Montoya remarks, “Black Tie & Burgers has become a well-known event in Pasadena and it was my pleasure to co-chair this year’s event with Tori McCullough. Saturday evening was a great success with the help of so many people and business.  I would like to thank the Junior League of Pasadena for supplying us with great volunteers and the Board of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena for all their work.  It was my honor to help so many families in need by helping put on the 2017 Black Tie & Burgers.”

The 9th Annual Black Tie & Burgers provides critical funds to support the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena.  Memberships and fees account for less than three percent of the Club’s revenue and more than two-thirds of the Club’s members receive financial aid for their memberships and transportation to the Club from school.  “We are very grateful to be able to offer our programs and services for a membership fee of only $100 per year,” Mr. Davis shares, “and events like Black Tie & Burgers helps close the gap between what families pay and the real costs – nearly $4,000 per member – of providing a great future at the Boys & Girls Club.”
