Two students from the University of California at Santa Cruz hosted a pair of Social Justice & Poetry workshops this month for our Mackenzie-Scott College Bound and Keystone programs. Steve Valenzuela, a sociology student, and Ale Sanchez, a community studies major, read poetry that addressing social issues to 13 of our teen members. The teens were then asked to write similar expressions about their own community using sentence starters such as “In my block…” and “I believe that in my community…” The second workshop shop took a closer look at the issues our teens face in their community and initiated a dialogue to discuss possible solutions. The presenters also spoke on the topic of higher education and explored factors that hinder our community from achieving higher rates of college graduates.
