Our own Blue Rays swim team participated in their second meet of the season this month with close to 30 swimmers competing in the event against the La Verne Gators and a squad from the Santa Anita Family YMCA. The meet began with a 100-yard Individual Medley (IM), which calls for swimmers to swim the length of the pool four times, each time using a different stroke (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle). The Blue Rays fastest time recorded came from Sebastian Vazquez, 13, with a time of 1 minute, 33.87 seconds. Even more impressive, Sebastian came back from a deficit of two body lengths and took first place by .58 of one second! Jada Hee, 10, took second place in the 100-yard girls IM with a time of 1 minute, 41.53 seconds.
Other notable swims were recorded by Cooper Klosterman, 7, who took second place in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 24.64 seconds in his very first swim meet. Amber Elias, 8, also had a great swim in the 25-yard freestyle with the time of 21.13 seconds. Jim Song, 14, posted a time of 34.81 seconds in the 50-yard butterfly to take first in his age group. Maaso Ortega, 10, took third in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 38.37 seconds.
The meet concluded with relays, with the final relay of the day (a 4 x 50-yard freestyle) featuring the team of Jim Song, Sebastian Vazquez, Arthur Vasquez, and Rece Fong. They took first by .89 of one second—just barely beating the La Verne Gators. A great job by everyone.
Special thanks to the Klosterman Family for providing snacks for the whole team after the meet!
