Blue Rays Get Some Distance

The Blue Rays Swim Team hosted the La Verne Gators at our Mackenzie-Scott branch on April 25.  Close to 30 Blue Rays turned out for the event, which marked the first time our members swam meters instead of yards this season, said Blue Rays Coach James Granados.

In the 100 meter Individual Medley we had the following great swims: Sabastian Vazquez took third with the time of 1 minute, 37.69 seconds (boys 13 and older) and Jonathan Ong took first with the time of 1 minute, 36.69 seconds (boys 11-12). Runner up for boys 11-12 was Quincey Sariano with a time of 1 minute, 39.44 seconds.  In the 8 and under age group, Amber Elias took first in all of her events, while newcomer Sebastian Liong took first place in his 25 meter backstroke. Bryan Sanchez took first in the 25 meter freestyle with a time of 29.38 seconds and Terrion Collins took third in the 25 meter backstroke with a time of 44.50 seconds.

But the biggest challenge of the day for the Blue Rays was the newly added 400 meter freestyle (16 lengths). A special shout out goes to the following team members who took on this challenge and did it well: Reese Fong, Jonathan Ong, Sebastian Vazquez, Jada Hee, Andrew Hee, Quincey Soriano, and Arthur Vasquez. Their hard work and dedication to practice showed.

“I was so proud of the team for their bravery and taking on new challenges at this meet.  This is the group’s first time swimming in meters this season vs yards and I have to say they killed it!” Coach James said.
