For their first meet of the season this month, the Blue Rays took on the La Verne Gators at our Slavik branch. Some 26 Blue Rays and 30 Gators turned out to complete in six different events: 50-yard breaststroke, 50-yard backstroke, 50-yard butterfly, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, and 100-yard individual medley. Competing among the Blue Rays were six new team members, including four who “graduated” from our swim lesson program. Notable swims were posted by: Azure Loeffen, 8, who took first in the 50-yard freestyle heat with a time of :42.59; Reece Fong, 12, who placed first in the 50-yard butterfly heat with a new personal best of :32.78; Arthur Vasquez, 12, who swam 13-14 year-old age group and placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with personal best of 1:05.50; and Emily Gersbach, 10, who took third place in the 50-yard freestyle at her first ever swim meet with a time of :40.28.
“I was extremely proud of the whole group, but especially our newest swimmers who were brave enough to get out there and put race under their belts!” said Aquatics Director James Granados. “Now that we’ve seen what we need to work on, we can come back to the next meet with some tangible goals. Today was just about finding those goals.”
